The rise of the 'no divorce' generation

13th April 2010

Although their parents may have used the services of a divorce solicitor in London, Brighton or maybe even over the internet, a new survey has revealed that the so-called children of the divorce generation still put their hopes and faith in the institution of marriage.

In a survey carried out by the fashion magazine More it was confirmed that 82 per cent of women whose parents had divorced still wished to get married and most of those wished to be wed in their mid-twenties. Eight out of ten of the survey's cohort thought marriage should be for life.

The respondents to the poll consisted of 2,000 women in their mid-twenties and revealed that most would like to be married by the time they are aged 26, having their first child one year on. According to the Yorkshire Evening Post this differs from attitudes of a decade ago, when women wanted to get married later.

Four out of 10 of the women questioned felt a couple were likely to have a successful marriage if their parents had remained married and not gone through relationship breakdown or divorce.

When it came to wealth, seven out of 10 of the respondents wanted a potential spouse who earned more than themselves, yet, only 14 per cent said they were willing to sign a prenuptial agreement.

More than 50 per cent of those polled said that they felt couples of today give up on marriage too quickly and 46 per cent said that the divorce process is too easy.
